Kerala is known for its emerald green backwaters and the houseboat rides through its placid backwaters. With the growth in tourism, an incredible surge in the demand for houseboat tour packages was seen among inbound tourists. This eventually led to a rise in the pollution of water bodies following tourism activities in the backwaters of Alappuzha, Kumarakom, and Pallathuruthy. The ‘Clean Vembanad’ drive was an initiative launched to address this issue. Conceived and implemented through the combined efforts of Kerala Tourism and Responsible Tourism Mission, the mission was carried out by the assorted consortiums of houseboat owners, enterprises and employees. The project helped in the introduction of scientific waste management solutions in the Vembanad region. The video details the various stages of this initiative starting from the project conception phase to its implementation.
