The famous Ramanathaswamy temple is a pilgrim attraction as it is one of the most sacred pilgrimage centres for Hindus in India. The holy baths in the sea (bay of Bengal) and the 22 wells (theertha) baths are believed to be for self-purification and remembering the forefathers. The other attractions in the town are Dhansuhkodi (20 km), Ram Sethu, various temples in the name of Sri Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana Vibheeshana etc. Here, Sankaracharya had established a math. Former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam hails from this place. There is a museum in his name.
