New public-private mechanism to 'fill gaps' in tourism development – Khmer Times

A new mechanism has been established to facilitate cooperation between the government and members of the private sector in boosting tourism development.

The Board on Tourism Marketing and Promotion seeks to strengthen the promotion of Cambodia as a tourism destination abroad.

The new body is composed of 15 members, with Minister of Tourism Thong Khon acting as chairman. As for the rest of the members, half will come from government agencies and the other half from private companies.

Member are chosen for five-year terms.

The Board on Tourism Marketing and Promotion is designed to promote partnerships and collaboration between the private sector and the government to showcase Cambodia’s potential in tourism to the world, Prime Minister Hun Sen said in a statement issued on Nov 27.

“The board will work to fill gaps in the tourism sector,” said Chhay Sivlin, a member of the board from the private sector.

“Although the number of international tourists is increasing every year, there is still a lot of room for improvement. We hope this board will help the country fulfill its potential.”


Sreat Mom Sophear, director of Sophiya Travel and Tour, welcomed the move.

“We see that the tourism market continues to expand, . However, there are still many issues that we have to deal with to improve the quality of our tourism products and continue attracting tourists,” Ms Mom Sophear said.

, an increase of 11.5 percent compared to the same period last year.

Chinese citizens top the list of tourists by nationality, with 1.6 million visiting the Kingdom from January to October.
