The footage shows the moment a rare, quadruple waterspout stunned locals and tourists on the remote island Koh Lipe, in the south of Thailand. One tourist can be heard asking: “Oh my God, what is it?”  Another replied: “That’s a cyclone, its sucking up the water.”

The video was captured by a worker on the island, Kim Puya.

When asked about the phenomenon she said: “I’ve never seen anything like this before. I’ve not even seen one waterspout, so it was amazing to see four of them together.

“The weather here is very dramatic because it’s an island in the ocean.

“Before the clouds came there was strong sun and it was hot, then out of nowhere, the dark clouds appeared.

“Nature is so powerful, it’s amazing.”

Meteorologists debating the even have said it is rare to have four waterspouts at the same time in such close proximity.

Waterspouts, or funnel clouds, are intense columns of swirling tornado clouds that appear over a body of water.

They are most commonly found in tropical areas and tend to only last for a couple of minutes and more regularly disappear after they come into contact with land.
