Series of Small Explosions in Bangkok
A number of small devices exploded in Bangkok today at locations including a BTS Skytrain station and a government office complex. Local reports say four people were hurt with one being described as suffering serious injuries. The incidents come after a controversial general election and at a time when Thailand is hosting a high profile meeting of foreign minsters in the Thai capital. Local analysts believe the type of devices used and the locations targeted were aimed at causing embarrassment to the government rather than intending to cause numerous casualties.
Thai police say three improvised devices exploded at the Government Complex on Chaeng Watthana Road in north Bangkok with another one failing to go off. Two other small ‘ping-pong bombs’ went off near the Chong Nonsi BTS skytrain station and one at the side of Rama IX Road. The events on Friday followed a bomb scare at Royal Thai police headquarters the previous evening. Two suspects have since been arrested in connection with that incident.
