The Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), after the successful Mumbai-Goa cruise launched this year[1], are now planning to start two new cruise services. Two cruises along the Mumbai coastline, from the Gateway of India to the Marine Drive will start operations from the newly-launched cruise terminal (DCT) at Princess Dock, Mazgaon.

Sanjay Bhatia, Chairman of the MbPT shared some details of the proposal. The Gateway of India[2] will undergo declutter operations. Operators for the services of passenger boats will be appointed very soon. Also, the one-kilometre stretch along the DCT will be transformed as the hub of new water transport. The 1-hour cruise along the Gateway of India to Marine Drive, will then return to the terminal.

Further, MbPT also plans on building a 150-metre jetty at Marine Drive[3], as a passenger terminal. The master plan for the cruises, proposes the construction of the jetty. The request has been submitted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). A 425-square-metre space will be allotted at the Birla Krida Kendra.

Meanwhile, the launch of cruise in Mumbai is a part of Maharashtra[4] and also India’s extensive plan to boost coastal tourism. In addition, Maharashtra Tourism Department has been promoting various water-transport services in Mumbai[5]. The successful launch and operations of Mumbai-Goa cruise along with the launch of two floatels (floating hotels with restaurants, bars and entertainment options) at the Gateway of India.

Additionally, the MbPT is working on the project of launching an eastern waterfront near the domestic cruise terminal. The proposed one-km stretch overlooking the beautiful Arabian sea will not only offer a mesmerizing view, but will have a number of other facilities. RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) services, seaside restaurants, iconic building, gardens, a skating rink, amphitheatre, seaside restaurants will be a part of the project. The area will be open to all citizens at a nominal cost of INR 5.
