Walking Around Kuala Sepetang (Perak)

Kuala Sepetang is a coastal town located in Larut, Matang and Selama District, Perak, Malaysia. Also known by English-speaking locals as Port Weld after a former Governor, Frederick Weld. It is a thriving fishing village, and the main jumping-off point to the river mouth community of Kuala Sangga, which is a Chinese fishing community at the river mouth which specializes in fish breeding in cages. Kuala Sepetang is the town where the first railway was built during the British Colonial era. The Port Weld railway station was located at the centre of town. The whole railway line from here to Taiping, which was the first railway line in the Peninsular, is now dismantled, and now only the ticketing booth and the Port Weld railway signboard remain. Today, the town is known for the Kuala Sepetang Charcoal factory, mangrove forests, mee udang (prawn noodles), seafood, eco tours (to see eagles/fireflies etc) ete. Food I ate: – The recommended iced red bean (Myr2.3) and curry mee (Myr4): “Ah Thai Curry mee was located at the sharp corner towards the main road called “Trump Road” and it is just next to the old “Port Weld” railway station sign. The specialty of this mee curry is it contains fresh prawn and creamy coconut milk. Also, it includes blood curd (猪血), bean sprouts and tofu puffs (豆腐卜).”
– The more famous Mee Udang Mak Jah restaurant was closed. So I had mee udang (Myr15) at the restaurant sort of next door. It wasn’t as spicy as I thought it would be and the prawns were a decent size…
– The night market had bubur hitam (black glutinous rice porridge with coconut milk and palm sugar or cane sugar)…
