Revolt of 1857 – India’s first War of Independence
10th May 1857. The Indian sepoys of the East India Company stationed in Meerut rose in revolt against their British masters. They set their comrades free and quashed those who tried to quell the uprising. The bugle of the first war of Indian independence had been sounded and there was no looking back. From Meerut to Delhi, from Lucknow to Kanpur, from Jhansi to Rohtak, and to many other places across the country, innumerable known and unknown martyrs ignited the flame that finally led to India’s independence in 1947. A grateful nation can but pay homage to them and build an India that they would be proud of.
Jai Hind.
